Charles Hulgraine Artworks

Charles Hulgraine

Charles Hulgraine is an Irish painter born in Dublin. Graduated in Architecture at DIT also in Art and Painting at NCAD Ireland. As well as painting, I am a Sculptor, Fine Printer and Draftsman working in Dublin Ireland. I exhibit regularly with the Leinster Print Studio Kildare, and the Strawberry Fields Studio Dublin, including numerous group exhibitions and the Royal Hibernian Academy. My work is conducted tru varied Medias mainly in landscape format characterising the intimacy of spaces, insect media, the manufactured landscape, urban fringe and Mans diminishing habitat – through drawing and painting.

I hold firm that an artists painting and drawing technique gives a direct insight into how the artist approaches his subjects, the environment, life values, humanity and mortality. My art ethos is influenced by my use and combination of varying materials, merging into the aesthetic by a deliberate dialogue and ultimately intuition. Generally my paintings, prints and drawings/collages are layer worked and reworked in purposeful repetition towards the quest for finality.

I aspire to the ordered approach and techniques of classical art making, particularly the Spanish and Italian tradition which I have studied and interpreted in detail but this is never allowed to impede my production of entirely contemporary works. It will be evident that my approach is expressive, spontaneous and notably varied as I consciously avoid a hallmark recognisable format. I paint and print what I see and invite the viewer to have opinions and attitudes to my works.
